Abstract
Oracle bone script, as the origin of China’s characters, is actually an textual forms of semantic and structural innovation that developed on the basis of the relatively mature writing system already existing in China. Research shows that the Chinese nation had the awareness of depicting and recording events as early as around 50,000 years ago, and entered the stage of using both “picture language” and “graphic text” around 15,000 years ago. During the Peiligang and Gaomiao and Liulinxi culture periods, a relatively mature writing system had already been formed. Moreover, the use of this writing system spanned the entire Neolithic Age and most of the characters in this system could be interpreted using the ancient Yi script belonging to the Sino-Tibetan language family. However, the research on the origin of Chinese characters has long been dominated by the “Chinese character-centered theory”, and a large number of engraved symbols unearthed from the Neolithic Age were often excluded from the character system. The author selected 152 engraved symbols unearthed from 13 archaeological sites in Sichuan Mengxi He, Hebei Sitai, Henan Jiahu, Hube Liu Linxi, and Shandong Da Wenkou etc as the research objects. Based on the over ten thousand ancient Yi characters included in the “Yunnan South Yi Character Dictionary”, a comparison of the character shapes and semantic interpretation were conducted. The results show:①89% of the symbols can be found in ancient Yi script with corresponding forms, pronunciations and meanings of their own. ②The “Dao” (the origin of the world), “Qian” (the celestial pole), “Feng” (offering to the heavens), and “Shen” (one who understands the laws of heaven) etc 32 core characters were deciphered, covering four major themes: sacrifices, astronomy, divination, and calendar. ③The character “Dao” has persisted for over 80,000 years, from the Mengxi He site dating back to about 80,000 years ago, to the Xindian Culture dating back to about 3,000 years ago, and up to the present day. This is a rare case of continuous text transmission worldwide. This research has provided a completely new methodological approach and empirical materials for solving the mystery of the origin of Chinese characters, and has also offered textual evidence for the early cultural community of the people of the Sino-Tibetan language family.
