Objective To explore the clinical efficacy of using the Peony and Licorice Decoction from Treatise on Cold Damage in the treatment of patients with lumbar disc herniation. Methods A total of 48 patients with lumbar disc herniation admitted to our hospital from May 2024 to November 2025 were selected and randomly divided into two groups (24 cases each) using a random number table. The control group received conventional Western medication, while the observation group was additionally treated with the Peony and Licorice Decoction. The therapeutic outcomes, pain symptoms, and functional recovery of both groups were evaluated. Results Compared to the control group, the observation group showed a higher overall effective rate (P < 0.05). At 3 days, 7 days, and 14 days of treatment, the observation group exhibited lower Numerical Rating Scale (NRS) scores for pain (P < 0.05). Additionally, the Oswestry Disability Index (ODI) decreased and the Japanese Orthopaedic Association (JOA) score increased in the observation group compared to the control group (P < 0.05). Conclusion The use of the Peony and Licorice Decoction from Treatise on Cold Damage in the treatment of lumbar disc herniation can further improve efficacy, effectively alleviate symptoms, and promote lumbar function recovery.
