[Abstract] Objective To investigate the clinical efficacy of magnesium valproate combined with quetiapine in the treatment of bipolar disorder (BD) manic episodes. Methods Eighty-eight patients with BD manic episodes from February 2021 to February 2023 were included and divided into two groups by coin-flip method. 44 cases in the control group were given magnesium valproate, and 44 cases in the observation group were given magnesium valproate combined with quetiapine. The efficacy, serum indexes and the occurrence of adverse reactions were compared between the two groups. Results Clinical global impression (CGI) and Young manic rating scale (YMRS) decreased significantly in both groups after treatment, and both scores in the observation group were lower than those in the control group after treatment (P<0.05). The levels of brain-derived neurotrophic factor (BDNF) increased and the levels of interleukin-1β (IL-1β) decreased in both groups after treatment, and both indexes were better in the observation group than in the control group (P<0.05). The difference in adverse reactions between the two groups was not statistically significant (P>0.05). Conclusion Magnesium valproate combined with quetiapine treatment effectively reduces the clinical symptoms of BD manic episodes, decreases the levels of inflammatory factors, and elevates the levels of neurotrophic factors without increasing the incidence of adverse effects.
