Objective To investigate the relationshipsbetweenMetabolic Syndrome (MS) and leptin, adiponectin, inflammatory cytokinesamong MS,non MS and pro-MS group in schizophreniapatients. Methods We enrolled 171acute schizophrenia patients that met the Diagnostic and Statistical Manual of Mental Disorders(DSM-IV).The patients was defined in MS group, non MS group, pre-MS group according to the National Cholesterol Education Program Adult Treatment Panel III diagnostic criteria.Serum levels of LEP, ADP and inflammatory cytokines were measured by ELISA.Results171 cases were recruited ,MS groupincludes 51cases(29.8%), non MS group includes 63 cases (36.8%)and pro-MS group includes 57cases(33.4%).Therewere significant differences of LEP, ADP and WBC among the three groups (P<0.05).The LEP、ADP、WBC between MS and non MS group were significantly different(all P﹤0.01),MS had significantly higher WBC levels than non MS group(P﹤0.05),pro-MS had signifcantlylowerWBC levels than MS group;there were no significant differences in IL-1, IL-6, TNF- αamong the three groups (P > 0.05).Correlation analysis showed that LEP was positively correlated with BMI, abdominal circumference and TG, and negatively correlated with HDL-C. ADP was positively correlated with HDL-C and negatively correlated with BMI, abdominal circumference and TG (P <0.05). The regression analysis showed that LEP were significant predictorof MS, OR was 1.37 and 95% CI was (1.09,1.73). ADP were significant predictorof MS, OR was 0.62 and 95% CI was (0.48, 0.82).Conclusion There is a certain correlation between Metabolic syndrome and LEP, ADP, WBC in schizophrenia ,LEP and ADP may partly predict the occurrence of MS.
