Abstract
This paper compares the translation work of two renowned translators of Zhuangzi, James Legge and Herbert Allen Giles. This paper highlights that Zhuangzi, a significant text from the Warring States period, has profoundly influenced later generations with its deep philosophical insights and distinctive literary style. The translations by Legge and Giles have facilitated the spread of Chinese philosophy and culture in the West, showcasing their varied interpretations and expressions of Zhuangzis philosophy. Through a comparative analysis of their translations of key concepts in Zhuangzi, this paper illustrates the unique translation styles and understandings of Zhuangzis philosophical thoughts. These translations provide Western readers with a window to comprehend the "Tao" and offer valuable resources for global cultural exchange and philosophical reflection. Through comparative analysis, this paper reveals the key role of English translations of Zhuangzi in promoting language exchange and understanding of connotations, aims to offer beneficial references and insights for the English translation and global dissemination of ancient Chinese classics, encouraging further exploration of effective methods to spread Chinese philosophy and culture worldwide.
