In the long history of China, supernatural fiction, as a unique literary genre, contains rich mythological legends, historical information and elements of traditional Chinese culture and is an important carrier for the inheritance and promotion of Chinese culture. In the context of globalization, the translation of ancient Chinese supernatural fiction can open a door for the world to gain an in-depth understanding of the ancient Chinese customs, religious beliefs and philosophical thoughts, enhance the international community’s understanding of the social features of ancient China, and promote the spreading and exchange of Chinese culture on the international stage. Taking the English translation of In Search of the Supernatural as the research object and based on Huang Zhonglian’s translation variation theory, this paper starts from the transformation rules and conducts an in-depth exploration and analysis of the practical strategies and methods in the translation process of ancient Chinese supernatural fiction. It is expected to provide a useful reference for the translation practice of Chinese literary works and cultural output, promote Chinese culture to “go global”, and facilitate the treasures of ancient Chinese literature to shine brightly on the international stage.
