Objective In order to improve the long-term prognosis of patients with schizophrenia, improving medication adherence is critical. Therefore, this study explores the relationship between cognitive function and medication adherence in patients with schizophrenia, so as to provide theoretical guidance for improving medication adherence in patients with schizophrenia. Methods A cross-sectional survey of 87 schizophrenic outpatients in the Hunan Brain Hospital from September 2020 to December 2020 was conducted by convenience sampling method, which mainly included a general condition questionnaire, the Medication Adherence Rating Scale, and the Brief Assessment of Cognition in Schizophrenia. Results Pearson univariate analysis showed that symbol coding, Tower of London, verbal memory, token movement, semantic fluency and total cognitive score were correlated with medication compliance (P < 0.05). Taking medication adherence as the dependent variable, multiple linear regression analysis showed that symbol coding was an independent factor affecting medication adherence (P < 0.05). Conclusion In this study, it was found that the symbol encoding ability of patients with schizophrenia was an independent factor affecting medication adherence, that is, attention and executive ability may be protective factors affecting medication adherence of patients, suggesting that we can improve patients medication adherence from the perspective of improving cognitive function in the future.
