Abstract
Through analyzing the use of the folk story of ancient Chinese Mulan by Chinese American writer Maxine Hong Kingston in The Woman Warrior, it is found that she used techniques such as addition, deletion, displacement, and rewriting to make significant changes to the original characters and plot. Therefore, her story is not a pure Chinese story that is loyal to Chinese cultural morality and spiritual values, nor is it a complete recognition of Chinese culture. On the contrary, the author portrays a Chinese American female hero with a distinct Western feminist consciousness. The new version of Mulan is both a Chinese myth and an American story, and its deep semantic structure differs greatly from the traditional Chinese version of Mulan. Maxine Hong Kingston has created a new image of Chinese women who are rich in the spirit of the times, ambitious, and independent.
