Objective To explore the efficacy and effect on cognitive function in long-term hospitalized schizophrenia patients taking clozapine. Methods Sixty-four schizophrenia patients taking clozapine in our hospital for more than 3 years were randomly divided into the study group (32 cases) and the control group (32 patients). The study group was treated with paliperidone based on clozapine treatment, and the control group was treated with clozapine alone for a total of 12 weeks. Positive and negative scales (PANSS) were assessed before treatment and at the end of treatment 12, and cognitive function was assessed by the MATRICS consensus test (MCCB). Results After 12 weeks of treatment, the scores of the PANSS scale in the study group decreased significantly compared with those before treatment (P <0.05), while the scores in the control group did not change significantly. The semantic fluency (t= -3.452), wired test (t=3.126), numerical sequence (t= -3.582), spatial span (t= -3.903), verbal memory (t= -4.868), visual memory (t=2.879), and emotion management (t= -4.658) were statistically different compared with the control group (P <0.05). Conclusion Combining palizapine with clozapine can improve their efficacy and improve their cognitive function.
