Objective To explore the effectiveness of a continuous care model based on peer support for patients undergoing permanent colostomy for rectal cancer. Methods Sixty patients who underwent permanent colostomy for rectal cancer in our hospital from January 2021 to December 2022 were selected and divided into a control group and an observation group according to different nursing methods. Each group had 30 patients. The control group received routine nursing intervention, while the observation group received continuous nursing intervention based on peer support. The self-care ability, quality of life score, and psychological state of the two groups were compared after nursing intervention. Results The self-care ability of the observation group was significantly stronger than that of the control group, with a statistically significant difference (p<0.05); The quality of life score of the observation group was significantly higher than that of the control group, and the difference was statistically significant (p<0.05); The psychological state of the observation group was significantly better than that of the control group, and the difference was statistically significant (p<0.05). Conclusion The continuous care model based on peer support has a significant effect on patients with permanent colostomy for rectal cancer, which can effectively improve their self-care ability, improve their quality of life and psychological state, and is worthy of clinical promotion and application.
