【Abstract】 Objective: Discuss the efficacy of artistic pyschotherapy for chronic schizophrenic patients. Methods: 114 chronic schizophrenic inpatients were randomly divided into a research group and a control group with 57 in each group. Artistic psychotherapy was applied to the research group. At the baseline, after 6 weeks and 12 weeks, Positive and Negative Syndrome Scale (PANSS) and Schizophrenia Quality of Life Scale Revision 4 (SQLR-R4) are used to evaluate the efficacy of the therapy. Results: 1. There was statistical difference after 6 weeks (t =15.426 P<0.01) and 12 weeks (t=4.812, P<0.01) for PANSS scale. There were statistical differences between two groups ofthe score of sub-scales of 6-week-followup and 12-week-followup. 2. There were statistical differences for SQLS-R4 scale after 6 weeks (t=8.161, P<0.01) and 12 weeks (t=15.107, P<0.01) of therapy.3. After repeated ANOVA, the sores of negative scale(F=22.109，P<0.01), positive scale(F=70.352，P<0.01), psychiatric scale（F=117.000，P<0.01）and totle score（F=117.000，P<0.01）；SQLS-R4（F=117.000，P<0.01） became lower after intervention.Conclusion: Artistic psychotherapy can improve the mental symptoms of chronic schizophrenic inpatients, help recovery and improve the quality of life in hospital.【Key words】 Artistic psychotherapy; schizophrenia; mental symptoms; quality of life
