Objective To compare the curative effect of agomelatine and sertraline in first-episode senile depression. Methods 116 patients with first-episode depression in the elderly patients, were randomly divided into observation group and control group, 58 cases in each group. The observation group received the treatment of agomelatine, the control group was given Seculin treatment. The clinical efficacy、 the improvement of bad sleep and adverse reactions of two groups were observed. Results At the end of 1 th week, scores of HAMD and PSQI decreased significantly (P<0.01) in observation group .At the end of 2th week, scores of HAMD and PSQI decreased significantly (P<0.01) in control group. At the end of the 1h、2th、4th、8th week, the scores of HAMD were significantly lower in observation group than control group. At the end of the 4th、 8th week，the scores of PSQI were lower in observation group than control group significantly (P<0.05)。The incidence rates of side effect in observation group were lower than in control group（P<0.05）. Conclusion In the treatment of elderly patients with first-episode depression, agomelatine has advantages on onset time, less adverse reaction, improving insomnia better, it is worth promoting and using.
