This study focuses on the English translation of Chinese ethnic minority literary works, taking the classic Dai literary work Zhao Shu Tun as a case study to explore the current status and existing issues in its English translation. At present, the English translation of ethnic minority literary works predominantly relies on Chinese translations as intermediaries. This indirect translation model, which follows a "source language—Chinese—English" pathway, often results in the loss of cultural information and deviations from the original meaning of the text. In response, this study proposes a more effective approach for translating Yunnan ethnic minority literary works, namely, direct translation from the source text in collaboration with expert translators. This approach emphasizes preserving cultural distinctiveness and ensuring linguistic accuracy throughout the translation process. The theoretical significance of this study lies in its contribution to expanding the scope of translation studies, particularly in the field of English translation of ethnic minority literature, offering new perspectives and methodologies for related research. Its practical significance lies in providing a viable translation strategy for the international dissemination of ethnic minority literary works, thereby promoting global recognition and appreciation of Chinese ethnic minority cultures.
