Abstract
Laozi (also known as Dao De Jing), traditionally attributed to Laozi(Lao Dan), an archivist of the Zhou dynasty, is renowned for its concise and profound wisdom. Within its five thousand characters, the text presents four key propositions on music: "tones and sounds harmonize with each other", "the five tones deafen the ear", " music and feasts detain the passing guest", and "the greatest music is faintly heard". Drawing upon classical commentaries and contemporary scholarship, this paper first explores the concept of "inaudible music" from two dimensions: the sound internalized within the mind and the sound harmonized with nature. Subsequently, it analyzes "audible music," specifically the notions of "tones and sounds" and "the five tones". Through this analysis, the study aims to elucidate the musical aesthetic thought within the Laozi, grounded in its foundational concept of the Dao (the Way).
