Objective To understand the current status of medical narrative ability and empathy ability of clinical nurses in tertiary general hospitals in Xian City, and to analyze the relationship between the two, to provide a reference for improving the empathy ability of clinical nursing staff. Methods In this study, 660 nurses from a tertiary general hospital in Xian City were selected as the subjects of the study from November to December 2023 using the convenience sampling method, and instruments such as the General Information Questionnaire, the Medical Narrative Competency Scale, and the Jefferson Empathy Scale were utilized to conduct the survey. Results The total scores of medical narrative ability and empathy ability of nursing staff in Xian tertiary general hospital were (151.15±19.93) and (110.67±16.72), which were at a medium level, and the correlation between medical narrative ability and empathy ability of nursing staff was significant. Conclusion Medical narrative ability and the empathy ability of nursing staff are closely related, and strengthening the training of medical narrative ability can promote the improvement of empathy ability and create a harmonious nursing environment.
