As a non-competitive antagonist of N-methyl-D-aspartate receptor, ketamine is mainly used in anesthesia and antidepressant treatment. However, long-term use of ketamine has a tendency of abuse and has serious effects on cognitive function, especially on memory, which limits its further use in clinical practice. The effects of ketamine on memory were mainly dose-dependent and time-dependent, and the effects on different memory patterns were inconsistent. This article will review the effect and mechanism of ketamine on short-term memory and long-term memory, and provide new ideas and treatment strategies for clinical use of ketamine to understand the relationship between ketamine and memory.
