郭士立是第一位深入中国内地的新教传教士，也是第一位在中国内地创办中文报刊的传教士。郭士立在中国的种种身份和行为都体现着复杂性和矛盾性：他既是传播福音的上帝使者，又是侵略者。这也为他在华办报的动机也增添了一层扑朔迷离的色彩。

| Abstract |
AugustGützlaff is the first protestant missionary in Chinas inland, and he founded the first Chinese newspaper.Guos all kinds of identity and behavior reflect his complexity and contradiction:he is both the messenger of God and the aggressor.All these help adding confusing colors to his motivation of runing Chinese newspaper.
